SWISHER
COUNTY SCHOOLS
This has been an interesting task to review the growth of our school
system. We have developed from one district to twenty-four, and
now we operate under three districts.
The schools have always been placed for the convenience of the
families.
Even the consolidation was for the greater good of the students.
Our schools, administration, and teachers deserve our support.

beginnings. Texas and Texans are no exception to these expressions.
In the separation from Mexico, Texans criticized the Mexican government
for not providing for a system of Public Education.
Shortly after M. B. Lamar became president of the Republic of Texas,
he sent the famous message to Congress urging that large blocks of
Public Land should be set aside as a permanent endowment fund for
the Public Schools. President Lamar knew that the land endowment would
not immediately establish schools, but it was all that the bankrupt
government could give for schools. This farsighted act has hade a
stabilizing financial influence on Texas schools. "It is admitted
by all that the cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy,

of man. It is the only dictator free men acknowledge and the only
security free men desire". - M. B. Lamar. - Therefore, President
Lamar is recognized as the "Father of the Public School System
