SWISHER COUNTY SCHOOLS

This has been an interesting task to review the growth of our school system. We have developed from one district to twenty-four, and now we operate under three districts.

The schools have always been placed for the convenience of the families. Even the consolidation was for the greater good of the students.

Our schools, administration, and teachers deserve our support.

Education and Public Schools have been household words in America from early beginnings. Texas and Texans are no exception to these expressions. In the separation from Mexico, Texans criticized the Mexican government for not providing for a system of Public Education.
Shortly after M. B. Lamar became president of the Republic of Texas, he sent the famous message to Congress urging that large blocks of Public Land should be set aside as a permanent endowment fund for the Public Schools. President Lamar knew that the land endowment would not immediately establish schools, but it was all that the bankrupt government could give for schools. This farsighted act has hade a stabilizing financial influence on Texas schools. "It is admitted by all that the cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy, and while guided and controlled by virtue, is the noblest attribute of man.
