CHILDRESS COMMUNITY
What is now known as the Childress Community is really the greater part of two former school districts, Childress School district on the south, and the former Sunnyslope district on the north. The new Community Center is set almost on the line between the two districts.

end of the bi-district January 1, 1918, with my husband and a family of two daughters. At that time, the one room school was known as the Edmonds school, named in honor of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Edmonds who had donated the land on which the school was built.
At that time, fences were rather scarce. We |

came
on almost a diagonal line from the stores in Happy to the corner near
the Bob Francy home where F.M. Road 1075 goes west from the old Running
Water road, (now F.M. 1424). Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Francy and family
were already there, as were Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Edmonds, A. W. Currie
family and the J. B. Greenfield family. A. S. Kiker also came about
the same time. He was a bachelor at the time, but was married about
a year later. The family of "Squad" Hurst's father and mother
were a welcome addition before too long, also, the family of the parents
of Ted Springer. Jack Hayes parents were also residents for a
number of years.
The small schoolhouse was the center of the Community. We had frequent
meetings for business or pleasure and occasionally were fortunate
enough to have a Sunday sermon. Community Christmas trees, school
programs, debates and occasionally a home talent play. We
had a piano for sing-songs and Mrs. Bob Johnston of Happy was
